Driver's Ed Info

Dear Parents,

It has been decided that for the safety of our students and instructors due to the Coronavirus that Driver’s Ed. will not be held this summer (2020) at Ell-Saline.  Even though the program will not be offered this summer, students can start the process of beginning to drive.  Our recommendation is the following:

  • A Student will pass the written test over the Kansas Driving Handbook through the Salina DMV  (Division of Motor Vehicle)  and obtain a  learner’s permit.  (They must have this permit for at least a year. This permit allows the student to drive with another licensed driver at least 21 years of age.  The student must obtain 50 hours of driving time, 10 at night ).
  • After a year and the student has obtained their 50 hours they can either pass the driving test at the DMV and receive their restricted license or hopefully take the Driver’s Ed. program at Ell-Saline (classroom and driving) next summer (2021)  .  After completing the Driver’s Ed program the student could take their Driver’s Ed. completion slip to the DMV to obtain their restricted license.  ( The completion slip allows the student to skip the driving test at the dmv )

***For a student to be eligible to take Driver’s Ed. at Ell-Saline the student must be at least 15 years old by  Aug. 31st. of the year which the class is offered and a completed Freshman or they can be 14 years of age if they have obtained a farm permit by the first day of Driver’s Ed. class.***

A  Kansas Driving Handbook for studying can be obtained online as well as many practice tests.  The handbook can also be purchased at the Salina DMV for $2 ???  The DMV is currently closed because of the virus but should open after May 18th.  It is best to call to make sure they are open since everything can change.        Salina DMV  785-825-0321

We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes you, we are just trying to keep everyone safe.  Please call with any questions you might have.
