ImPACT Testing Information & Dates
Testing Dates: August 19th, 20th & 21st, 2013
In conjunction with Salina Regional Health Center, Ell-Saline USD 307 has started an innovative program for its student-athletes. This program will assist team physicians and athletic trainers in evaluating and treating head injuries such as concussions. The program will help us manage concussions sustained by student-athletes.
Salina Regional Health Center has acquired a software tool called ImPACT (Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing). ImPACT is a computerized exam that is used in many professional, collegiate and high school sports programs across the country to successfully diagnose and manage concussions. Salina USD 305, Southeast of Saline USD 306 and Twin Valley USD 240 have begun using it this fall. If an athlete is believed to have suffered a head injury during competition, ImPACT is used to help determine the severity of the head injury. It is also used to help determine when the injury has fully healed.
The computerized exam is given to athletes before beginning contact sport practice or competition. This test is non-invasive and is set up in “video-game” format. It takes about 15-20 minutes to complete, is simple and many athletes enjoy the challenge of taking the test. It tracks information such as memory, reaction time, speed and concentration. Essentially, the ImPACT test is a preseason physical of the brain. It is not an IQ test. Participation in this program is voluntary. The pre-season ImPACT test is free.
If a concussion is suspected, it is advised that the athlete, with parental consent, take the test again after the injury. Both the preseason and post-injury test data are given to a local doctor who has training on this program to help evaluate the injury. The information can also be shared with your family doctor. The test data will assist these health professionals in their determination of when it is safe for the athlete to return to practice and play. If an injury of this nature occurs to your child, you will be promptly contacted with all the details.
The ImPACT testing procedures pose no risks to your student-athlete. We are excited to implement this voluntary program. It provides valuable information. It may help prevent potential brain damage that can occur with multiple concussions. The USD 307 administration and coaching staff wishes to keep your child’s health and safety at the forefront of the student’s athletic experience.
