Bullying Prevention
Are You Ready to be a Cardinal Hero?
The second semester kicked off with a school bullying prevention assembly on the afternoon of January 5th. The senior class presented skits depicting typical bullying scenarios. One scene was a girl who wanted to try out for the cheerleading team. However, the head cheerleader didn’t like her and told her she couldn’t join. The co-captain of the team signed her name on the list anyway and told her to show up for team try-outs. When the girl showed up at try-outs she was the best cheerleader and ended up joining the team. Another scene was a new student who endured physical bullying nearly every day. The “super” cardinal hero came to his rescue to help the new student fit in at his new school. The senior class did a great job of showing what goes on in some schools. Ell-Saline High School is striving to make our school a safer and happier place for students.
The Ell-Saline High School schedule now includes a bullying prevention class every Wednesday. We take 30 minutes to talk about school rules against bullying. They are: we will not bully others; we will try to help students who are bullied; we will include students who are easily left out; and when we know somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home. All middle school and high school students participate in these awareness educational sessions. The groups are composed of either all high school or all middle school student membership. The groups meet with the same adult leader each week. These meetings afford students an opportunity to raise awareness, to develop effective coping skills through role-playing activities, and to discuss school situations on a weekly basis.
The Wednesday meetings throughout the spring semester will help us improve the environment at Ell-Saline. Students will play an active role in identifying our Cardinal Heroes as they minimize the impact of bullying.
