Spring Forward One Hour

Sunday, March 14th

by Dale Dodd

February 18, 2010

Daylight Saving Time (DST) begins at 2:00 a.m. on March 14, 2010.  Turn your clocks ahead one hour.  This is the fourth year affected by the 2005 broad energy bill that extended Daylight Saving Time by four weeks.  This law started DST three weeks earlier and extended its closure by one week.

One of the biggest reasons we change our clocks is that it reportedly saves electricity.  Benjamin Franklin, while a minister to France, first suggested the idea.  For the correct time of the day, you can call the Department of Transportation at 900.410.TIME.  There is a charge for the call.

The National Fire Protection Association and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommend that consumers change the battery in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when we change the clocks for DST.  While you've got the ladder out to check smoke detectors, why not change a bulb?  Switching to energy efficient bulbs in your ceiling fixtures could save you $30 a year per bulb on your electricity bill.
