Computer Applications II
Occupation Briefings
by Dale Dodd
March 25, 2009
Students in Mr. Dodd’s second Computer Applications class are presenting occupational briefings using Power Point slides. Each student has selected a potential future career using results from three detailed personality, skill, and value questionnaires to narrow the field to “best fit” jobs. The class completed these assessments at www.careerpipeline.org. The school counselor, Mr. Larry Laas, arranged for each student to receive a unique user identification and password to gain access to the web site.
The web site offers details about each occupation to include typical work tasks, working conditions, required educational qualifications, U.S. and median salaries, as well as current and future outlook for the job. Students can develop an online resume and search for actual job openings in every state of the union. Consequently, many students choose to use the web site after graduating from High School while searching for employment.
This class activity combines Power Point skills learned in class with a real world occupation while polishing presentation skills. The activity is a perennial favorite for all students. Parents may also visit the web site to obtain information to assist their students with future career choices.
