New Seatbelt Enforcement
by Deputy Chad Flesher
August 16, 2008
The Saline County Sheriff's Office would like to advise everyone that there has been some recent changes to the Kansas Seat Belt laws. In years past, law enforcement officers needed to observe another traffic violation in order cite someone for not wearing a seatbelt. That same rule still applies to adults, however it has changed for those 14 to 18 yrs of age.
For those in that age group, Kansas law (KSA 8-2503) states that "every occupant of a passenger car, who is at least 14 yrs of age, but less that 18 yrs of age, shall have a safety belt fastened properly around such person's body at all times when the passenger car is in motion."
What this means is that the seat belt law is now a "primary" law for those between 14-18 yrs old. If a law enforcement officer sees a youth without a seatbelt on, they can be stopped and cited. The fine for this offense is now $60.
The Saline County Sheriff's Office will be aggressively enforcing this new law at Ell-Saline especially before and after school. Please drive safely and buckle up!!!
